Chipping Sparrow

Rufous-Crowned Sparrow

Aimophila ruficeps

General appearance

The Rufous-crowned Sparrow is small to medium-sized, measuring between 5-6 inches long. It has a distinctive rusty crown and heavy dark whisker mark. The bird appears to have a big bill and flat head. It displays black, brown, gray, red, and tan colors. Its wings are broad and its tail has a rounded, square-tipped shape. The Sparrow's habitat is very different from that of others, being less secretive.

Male vs female

In the Rufous-crowned Sparrow species, there are no notable differences between the males and females in terms of physical appearance or coloration. Both sexes share the same rusty crown, dark whisker mark, and color scheme. Therefore, the males and females are visually similar.

Juvenile

Juvenile Rufous-crowned Sparrows are not distinctly different from the adults in physical appearance. However, they are typically more secretive like the adult Swamp Sparrows but unlike the other more petite and less secretive chipping and other rusty-capped sparrows. More detailed information would be needed to accurately describe their juvenile stage.

How to tell the Rufous-Crowned Sparrow from the Chipping Sparrow

Visual differences

The Rufous-Crowned Sparrow (5-6 inches) and Chipping Sparrow (5-5.5 inches) both feature rust-colored crowns but differ in distinct markings and size. The Rufous-Crowned Sparrow has a larger bill, heavy dark whisker mark, and rounded square-tipped tail. In contrast, the Chipping Sparrow has a prominent white eyebrow and black eyeline, with a gray rump and notched to square-tipped tail. Both birds share a blend of black, brown, gray, and red feathers, but their facial markings and rump color help differentiate them.

Key differences and behavior

Rufous-Crowned and Chipping Sparrows exhibit notable behavioral differences in the field. Rufous-Crowned Sparrows are solitary, staying within fixed territories and exhibiting wariness towards humans, while Chipping Sparrows are more social, often seen in groups. In terms of habitat, Rufous-Crowned Sparrows prefer rocky, grassy slopes, while Chipping Sparrows thrive in open woods and suburban areas. Breeding behaviors differ as well; Rufous-Crowned Sparrows are monogamous, nesting on the ground, while Chipping Sparrows can be polygamous, with nests in trees or on the ground. Diet-wise, both consume insects and seeds, but Chipping Sparrows are more frequent at feeders. Finally, Rufous-Crowned Sparrows are relatively poor flyers, typically limiting their movements, whereas Chipping Sparrows are more adaptive and mobile.
