Gambel’s Quail or Scaled Quail?
Here's how to tell the difference
Gambel’s Quail
Scaled Quail
Gambel’s Quail
Callipepla gambelii
General appearance
The Gambel’s quail is between 10-11 1/2" (25-29 cm) in size, about the size of a crow. It exhibits a curving topknot with white stripes set against chestnut-red sides. The colors associated with this bird include black, brown, gray, red, tan, and white. Its wings have a fingered, rounded, and short shape, while the tail takes a rounded, short, square-tipped shape.
Male vs female
There are noticeable differences between the male and female Gambel’s quail. The male sports a reddish cap, complete with a black patch at the center of its yellow belly. The female, on the other hand, is redder on the sides than the female California Quail, and displays less scaly pattern on the belly.
Juvenile
The description does not supply the differences between juveniles and adults or provide any seasonal variations in the Gambel’s quail appearance. Addtitional information may be required to adequately describe these features.

Callipepla squamata
Also known as: Blue Quail, Cotton-Top
General appearance
Scaled quail, or Callipepla squamata, are medium-sized birds noted for their bluish-gray plumage with distinctive scaly patterns on their chest and neck. They have a bushy white crest on their heads that resembles a tuft, which is prominent year-round. Their wings are brown with white and black markings, and they possess stout bills and short tails. Typically, they inhabit arid and semi-arid regions, making them well-adapted to desert environments.
Male vs female
Males and females are similar in coloration, making it difficult to distinguish between genders based on plumage alone. However, males can sometimes have slightly more pronounced patterns and may be marginally larger in size. Both sexes exhibit the characteristic scaled appearance and white crest, which remain relatively consistent throughout the year.
Juvenile
Juvenile scaled quails are generally duller than adults, with grayish-brown feathers and less distinct scaling on their chests. Their crest is less developed, appearing shorter and less prominent compared to adults. As they mature, juveniles gradually acquire the defining scaly pattern and coloration of adults.

Visual differences
Gambel's Quail (~10-11.5 inches) displays a curving topknot, chestnut-red sides, and a black patch on the male's yellow belly, with less scaling on females. In contrast, Scaled Quail (~10-12 inches) features bluish-gray plumage with distinct scaly patterns and a bushy white crest. Both exhibit short, rounded wings and tails. Males of Gambel’s have a reddish cap, while Scaled Quail genders are visually similar. Gambel’s plumage includes black, brown, red, and tan, differing from the more uniform blue-gray of Scaled Quail.
Key differences and behavior
Gambel's Quail and Scaled Quail exhibit distinct behaviors and habitat preferences. Gambel's Quail favors Sonoran deserts with shrubs and low trees, relying heavily on plant-based foods and forming pair bonds during nesting. They exhibit unique behaviors such as parent-chick communication pre-hatching and territorial calls from males. In contrast, Scaled Quail inhabit arid grasslands and are often seen in large coveys, displaying a social behavior of huddling together at night. They consume a more varied diet, including more insects, and unmated males call for mates from elevated positions. Both species nest on the ground, but Gambel's Quail prefers open ground near water, while Scaled Quail utilize rolling hills and grassland transitions. Overall, Gambel's Quail are more sedentary and pair-focused, while Scaled Quail are social and adapt to wider habitat variations.
