Zebra Finch or Saffron Finch?
Here's how to tell the difference
Zebra Finch
Saffron Finch
Zebra Finch
Taeniopygia guttata
General appearance
Zebra finches are small birds with strong beaks, measuring approximately 10 cm long. They have distinct white and gray coloration, with vivid black striping resembling a zebra's stripes and a red-orange beak, which matches their legs and feet in color.
Male vs female
Male zebra finches are more vibrant than females. They feature chestnut colored cheeks, a bright red beak, and distinct black and white striping or 'zebra stripes' on their throat and chest. On the other hand, females are predominantly gray without stripes on the chest or cheeks.
Juvenile
Juvenile zebra finches share a similar look to adult females due to their predominantly gray color. After birth, they have a black beak that turns to red-orange as they mature. The unique black and white striping pattern develops later on male juveniles.

Sicalis flaveola
General appearance
Saffron finches have a bright yellow coloring that distinguishes them from other birds. Notably, they possess a striking yellow-greenish hue on their wings and tail, and their beaks are coloured light orange. Their entire body is adorned with saffron hues, living up to their name. Size-wise, they are relatively small, typically ranging between 13 to 15 cm.
Male vs female
The males are more vibrant in color than the females, their yellow being strong and bright, often with vague streaks of black on the back. On the other hand, female saffron finches are typically paler, with an almost greenish-yellow upper part. Moreover, the females also have brown streaks on their belly.
Juvenile
Juvenile saffron finches have a dull yellow coloration and blend in more effectively with their surroundings than the adults. They are characterized by their faintly streaked underparts and lack the black markings on the upper parts, characteristic of adult males. Their appearance undergoes significant changes as they mature into adults and their colour brightens becoming more vibrant.

Visual differences
The Zebra Finch (4-4.3 in, 0.3-0.6 oz) is smaller than the Saffron Finch (5.3-5.9 in, 0.4-0.8 oz). Zebra Finches feature a white and gray plumage with black stripes and a red-orange beak, while Saffron Finches are bright yellow with yellow-greenish wings and tails and a light orange beak. Male Zebra Finches have chestnut cheeks and distinctive throat stripes, unlike Saffron Finches, whose males are uniformly yellow with possible black streaks. Female Saffron Finches are paler with brown streaks, whereas female Zebra Finches are predominantly gray.
Key differences and behavior
Zebra Finches and Saffron Finches exhibit distinct behavioral and ecological preferences. Zebra Finches, native to Australia's arid regions, engage in vocal parenting discussions and prefer open habitats with water access, including urban settings. Their courtship involves song and displays, forming lifelong bonds. They predominantly eat grass seeds but incorporate insects during breeding. In contrast, Saffron Finches reside in South American tropical areas, performing aerial courtship and remaining unafraid of humans, often nesting on structures. They thrive on grass seeds and grains, also boosting insect intake during breeding. Both species co-parent their chicks, with Zebra Finches forming nests close to the ground and Saffron Finches often using higher, man-made locations. At bird feeders, both species favor smaller seeds, but Saffron Finches might also eat sunflower seeds and fruit. The Saffron Finch is generally larger (5.3-5.9 inches) than the Zebra Finch (4-4.3 inches).
